Abstract (original English)

Neurodegenerative diseases and spinal cord injuries (SCI) pose a significant burden on the healthcare system globally. Diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Huntington's disease precipitate cognitive, motor, and behavioral deficits. Parallelly, spinal cord injuries produce sensory and motor deficits, which are burdensome psychologically, socially, and economically. Current management strategies focus only on symptomatic relief, with no definitive cure. Stem cells have been explored for regenerative therapy. This review focuses on developments, limitations, and future potential of stem cell therapy. Stem cells affect the central nervous system via neuroprotective mechanisms, immunomodulatory effects, and mitigation of oxidative stress. The clinical implications of stem cell therapy in treating neurodegenerative diseases and SCI are debatable due to varied outcomes. Challenges related to sample size, long-term follow-up, and assessment of adverse effects should be mitigated in future research. Researchers are currently exploring optimal stem cell types along with various transplantation strategies. Biomaterials integrated with stem cells are a novel approach for treating neurodegenerative diseases and spinal cord injuries. Certain genetic modifications have shown improved results. What this study does not prove

  • • This study does not prove SVF is an approved treatment or a replacement for standard care.
  • • This is a narrative review: it collects no new patient data and does not systematically appraise evidence quality.
